Dr. Fritz Wetzel

Dr. Fritz Wetzel is a German and European Patent Attorney and has practiced Intellectual Property law since 2002 with a focus on Chemistry related topics, in particular organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, plastics technology, pigments and dyes, liquid crystals, biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and pharmaceuticals. Fritz has additional technical background in mechanical engineering. Thanks to his combination of educational skills, Fritz can additionally handle technical cases in process technologies, biotechnology and medicine technology. He has long-standing experience in patent drafting, prosecution, legal opinions, litigation, opposition and nullity proceedings as well as in trademark law.

After having studied one-year mechanical engineering and process technology at the Technical University of Munich, Fritz switched to chemistry and graduated in 2000 in Chemistry from the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. He received his doctorate in Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry in 2004 and continued his research as a postdoctoral fellow about bioorganic functional chips.

Fritz was co-founder of LambdaChem GmbH, a chemistry company, in 2002 and was the winner of the Munich Business Plan Competition 2003. Within his company he gained professional experience as director of research and development in the field of dyes and polymers and was responsible for IP matters of the firm. This competence gives him additional insight in the companies needs in terms of IP management from the “idea” of an invention to the final product protected by intellectual property rights. He works with clients of all sizes and experience, from consulting with inventors through application drafting and patent procurement, to obtain protection for their ideas.

Fritz is admitted to the European Patent Office, the German Patent and Trademark Office, the German Federal Patent Court and the German Supreme Court for nullity proceedings. He is also a registered European Trademark and Design Attorney. He is a member of EPI, AIPPI, PTMG, INTA and FICPI and is honorary member and CFO of Kompetenznetzwerk IP e.V.
